PA از حرارت دادن فتالیک اسید نیز به دست می آید. کاربردهای فتالیک انیدرید عمده کاربرد فتالیک انیدرید در سنتز پلاستی سایزرها، رزین های آلکیدی و رزین های پلی استر غیر اشباع می باشد. مشتقات این ماده فتالات استرها هستند که خود عامل اصلی تهیه نرم کننده هایی مانند DIDP، DOP، BBP و DINP می باشند. این ترکیبات اصلی ترین نرم کننده ها برای رزین های پلی وینیل کلراید می باشند که مصرف عمده آن در طناب های پلاستیکی، شیلنگ های باغبانی و وسایل خانگی می باشد. رزین های پلی استر غیر اشباع از واکنش یک اسید غیر اشباع دی کربوکسیلیک، گلیکول ها و یک نوع اسید آروماتیک کربوکسیلیک که غالبا PA یا ایزو فتالیک اسید و یا مخلوط آن دو به دست می آید. این رزین ها در استخر، رویه های سقف، لوله ها، قایق های تفریحی، وسایل اسکی، تانک های ضد زنگ و لوازم بهداشتی مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد. رزین های آلکیدی از واکنش اسیدهای چند عاملی و یا انیدریدها مانند فتالیک انیدرید، ایزو فتالیک و مالئیک انیدرید با گلیسیرین و یا پنتا اریتریتول به دست می آیند. رزین های آلکیدی در پوشش های معماری، مصارف خانگی، تجاری و صنعتی و در رنگ های لاستیکی و ترافیکی استفاده می شوند.
