Phthalic anhydride with the chemical formula C₈H₄O₃ is a chemical compound with the PubCom ID; Its molar mass is 148.1 grams per mole. The appearance of this compound is white grains. Phthalic anhydride is the main commercial form of phthalic acid. This colorless solid is an important industrial chemical, especially for the large-scale production of plastic lubricants. Today, phthalic anhydride is made from the oxidation of naphthalene or ortho-xylene in the gaseous phase of air flow with vanadium pentoxide and titanium dioxide. This reaction is exothermic and maleic anhydride is also produced as a by-product. PA is also obtained by heating phthalic acid.
Applications of phthalic anhydride
Main applications of phthalic anhydride in the synthesis of plasticizers, alkyd resins and polyunsaturated resins Be. Derivatives of this substance are phthalate esters, which are the main agents of softeners such as DIDP, DOP, BBP and DINP. These compounds are the main softeners for polyvinyl chloride resins, which are mainly used in plastic ropes, garden hoses and home appliances.
Unsaturated polyester resins from the reaction of an acid Unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, glycols, and a type of carboxylic aromatic acid, often PA or isophthalic acid, or a mixture of both. These resins are used in swimming pools, roofs, pipes, yachts, skis, stainless steel tanks and sanitary ware.
Alkyd resins from the reaction of multifactorial acids or Anhydrides such as phthalic anhydride, isophthalic and maleic anhydride are obtained with glycerin or pentaerythritol. Alkyd resins are used in architectural coatings, home, commercial and industrial applications and in rubber and traffic paints.
PA Also used as antiviral, flame retardant, pigment production, halogenated anhydrides, resin Polyamide and polyester polyols are used. Quinoline yellow is a popular color obtained from the phthalic compression of phthalic anhydride and 2-methyl quinoline.
