What is sodium sulfide?
Sodium sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula Na2S, or more commonly known as its hydrated form Na2S•9H2O. Both are colorless water-soluble salts that form very strong alkaline solutions.
When sodium sulfide and its hydrates are exposed to air humidity, they release hydrogen sulfide gas, which has a smell similar to rotten eggs.
Some of its industrial samples exist in the form of polyaqueous sodium sulfide (Na2SxH2O) with a specific weight percentage of sodium sulfide.
Common samples usually contain about 60% by weight of sodium sulfide (Na2S•3H2O). Such samples have a relatively yellow appearance due to the presence of polysulfides, these samples are known as "sodium sulfide shells".
The main uses of sodium sulfide are:
1- It is used in making sulfur textile dyes and in dyeing textiles and artificial silk. (copper sulfate can also be used as an alternative)
2- In the leather industry (sodium sulfate can also be used as an alternative)
3- It is widely used in the paper industry, for example, this combination is used in the production of writing papers and newspapers.
4- It is used as a weak reducing agent in some chemical reactions.
5- It is widely used as a parasite killer in the agricultural industry.
