Waters that have a high sedimentation capability due to high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions are called hard water. The main factor behind the formation of deposits on surfaces, inside pipes and in thermal facilities such as steam boilers and cooling towers is the hardness of water or calcium and magnesium salts. Hard water in industrial uses causes many problems due to high sedimentation and corrosion. Sedimentation and problems caused by water hardness become more and more visible with increasing temperature.
The creation of sediments and hard layers of lime in the installation systems and the internal walls of heating devices, in addition to blocking the passage of water in the pipes, increases corrosion, reduces the life of the devices, reduces efficiency in heat transfer and increases fuel consumption. Resin hardener is the most reliable and efficient solution to remove calcium and magnesium ions and reduce water hardness. In this device, calcium and magnesium are taken from the passing water with the help of ion exchange resins.
Resin is an insoluble and gel-like polymer material in the form of small spherical grains that can absorb or introduce certain ions from water without major physical changes in its structure. The resin used in hardeners is cationic. Prolite, Amberlite and Hydrolite products can be mentioned among the brands available in the Iranian market.
The hardening device consists of a cylindrical steel tank with a bed of cationic hardening resins. By passing water through the bed of resins, the hardness of the water is removed and soft water without precipitating salts is produced. The soft water output from this device is very desirable for industrial use, feeding steam boilers and thermal installations. The capacity of resins becomes saturated over time. The special ability of the resin is that in the vicinity of the salt water solution, its capacity is restored to its original state and its ability to remove calcium and magnesium ions is restored again. Regeneration of resins is done easily by passing salt water inside the device, which is done automatically or manually by changing the position of the multi-way valve on the device. The operation of the device can be planned and controlled according to the operating time, the volume of water passing through and the concentration of hardness in the output water.
