As its name suggests, this spray pattern is a flat plate. It is seen from the liquid. A linear spray pattern is formed with an oval or round orifice or on a deflected surface that is tangential to the outlet. The outlet opening has an outer groove with a contoured inner cylindrical radius or "cat's eye" shape. In the elliptical design of the exit opening, the spray exits the opening in the direction of the pipe. In the deflector design, the spray pattern is perpendicular to the pipe.
