What is lead nitrate?
Lead (II) nitrate is a chemical compound, an inorganic salt of nitric acid and lead, with the chemical formula Pb(NO3)2. It is a colorless crystal or white powder and a strong and stable oxidizer. Unlike most lead(II) salts, it is soluble in water. Lead nitrate is decomposed by heating and this property is used in the chemical industry.
Applications of lead nitrate
As a heat stabilizer in nylon and polyesters and in photothermographic paper coatings
Application as an accelerator in the cyanidation process of gold and other precious metals in mining
As a very strong oxidizer in combination and decomposition and in general chemical reactions
Application for the production of other lead salts
Stabilizer in paint and dyeing industries
This substance can be used as analysis reagents, photosensitizers and oxidizers.
It is used for the production of lead salts, as well as in medicine, printing and dyeing, tanning and paper industry (as a yellow pigment for paper industry), matches, paints and pigments, fireworks and explosives and other industries.
Safety tips
Lead(II) nitrate is toxic and should be handled with care to avoid inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. Because of its hazardous nature, limited applications of lead(II) nitrate are under constant supervision. This material should be handled and stored with great care.
