Ammonium iron(III) sulfate, NH4Fe(SO4)2.12 H2O, or NH4Fe(H2O)62.6 H2O, also known as ferric alum, ferric ammonium sulfate (FAS), or ferrous alum, is a double salt. It is in the category of alums, which are compounds with the general formula [AB(SO4)2. 12 H2O] is formed. This crystal is formed with 12 water molecules. In the air, this water evaporates slowly and the compound takes on a yellow color. These compounds are used for purifying polluted water, dyeing process and producing chemicals.
The appearance of this compound is in the form of octahedral crystals and pale purple in color. There is some debate as to the origin of the crystals' color, with some attributing it to impurities in the composition and others claiming it is a property of the crystal itself. The color of the crystals does not seem to directly affect its industrial use, but rather the properties of the compound itself. For example, its color could potentially serve as an indicator of its quality or purity, although this is not typically how a product is evaluated in an industrial setting. Instead, the use of iron (III) ammonium sulfate is determined according to its chemical properties and industrial applications.
FAS is paramagnetic, acidic and toxic to microorganisms. Iron(III) ammonium sulfate is a weak oxidizing agent that can be converted to Moore's salt, ferrous ammonium sulfate. Mohr's salt or ammonium iron (II) sulfate is a chemical substance that is also known as the double salt of iron sulfate and ammonium sulfate.
This crystalline solid is known as a light blue-green color. Ammonium iron (II) sulfate 6 Abe is used as an analytical and titration standard.
